IGTV - what is it and how to use it
I remember few years ago, when video recording on a smartphone was just becoming a thing, all those funny gifs of how you shouldn't record vertically.
Over the years many companies attempted to create a compelling video platform and there never was one really good one. At some point Youtube finally managed to break through, but I do have a feeling it wouldn't have been so easy for them if Google didn't own them. That doesn't matter tho. Right now they're the big boys and no-one could challenge them. IGTV might change this. Or maybe it;s not even that? IGTV feels a bit like it's creating a whole new nieche, one focused on vertical videos and everyday sharing. Plus just like Youtube it has the backing of a giant in the form of Facebook. Not to mention that nowadays so many people use instagram that with some proper IG->IGTV integration all those videos are bound to have a lot of views. See, it is looking interesting!
While Instagram was limiting us to only one minute of video, IGTV allows a ten minute long footage or even an hour long for those of us with bigger following! That's quite impressive and I do get the feeling that we might start seeing more vlogs this way.
And the use is so straigh forward! Just remeber one thing: your video has to be vertical (aspect ratio of 4:5 or 9:16), otherwise IGTV won't see it in your phones gallery and won't allow you to upload it from your device. After having a video like that on your phone all you have to do is press your picture, which will lead you to your channels main page
and over there press the "+" icon.
After all of this it's your usual Instagram approach, selecting the thumbnail from your gallery, adding description and hashtags with two major differences: first one is that you also need to add a title to your post and the second one allows you to change the cover/thumbnail of your video. Now that second one is especially tempting for me as it allows you to use a different frame from your video (and you can be very specific about it) or use an external image. Very useful!
Hope all of this does sound interesting and I'll see you on IGTV soon! Don't forget to follow and check out my own account http://www.instagram.com/simonmigaj and I'll see you in the next one!
